If you’re in the market for a new telly, it’s probably worth thinking for a moment about what you’re going to put it on. You’d be surprised how many people still assume that their new flatscreen will include some kind of stand with it, after all, it was a standard thing when you bought that Sony Trinitron or whatever ten years ago. But in actual fact, virtually none of the modern sets come with any more than a “pedestal” – a foot, in other words – to allow you to stand it on a flat surface. That may be your old TV stand if possible, or a chest of drawers, or a coffee table even, but if you don’t have or don’t want to put it on one of those, what do you do?

The fashion at the moment seems to be to hang them on the wall, like a picture. This works well enough, but there are a number of drawbacks. Unless your living room is vast, you’ll end up watching at a poor angle, rather like sitting in the front row of the cinema. There’s no obvious place to put your extra equipment. And then there’s the wires…there’ll be at least two of them, a lot more if you have Sky or a DVD player or a games console. Do you leave them dangling up the wall, or do you bury them in the plaster and then have to redecorate afterwards? And if you do, what happens if a wire breaks and needs replacing?

There’s a lot of questions and issues over wall-mounting a flat-screen TV, but

The central support hides all the wires!

The central support hides all the wires!

we think they’re answered quite successfully by this new range of TV stands from British company Off-The-Wall. As their name suggests, they’re all about steering people away from hanging TVs on the wall and re-establishing the TV stand as a piece of quality furniture and a focal point in the living room. The idea is simple; a base with a single central column, onto which the TV can be mounted using the wall-mount holes on the rear. This gives the pleasing effect of the TV “floating” above the floor with no obvious means of support. Glass shelves below provide room for your DVD player and other equipment, and the central column cunningly hides all the wiring behind. There is a limit to how many wires can be contained here, but unless you have a home cinema system it’s normally possible to hide the lot and leave just two cables emerging from the back to the wall sockets – one for the power and one for the aerial or satellite dish. As standard the base is available in black or silver,

but most people choose the optional wood finish for a little extra cost.

The stands are available in two sizes depending on whether your set has up to a 32″ screen, or between 32″ and 50″. Both are extremely solid and substantial despite their elegant design, and very stable. Aside from the basic black or silver options, the base can be had in an oak, cherry or walnut finish, which look stunning with a matching laminate floor!
