100w BC Pearl Lightbulb
Tuesday, 22 Sep 2009 ~ Posted by Mook
Here we have a Crompton, 100w, Bayonet cap, Light bulb in a Pearl Finish.
The bulb itself is smaller than expected, especially compared to light bulbs a few years ago. Apparently the small size is due to manufacturers reducing production costs by using less material. Surprisingly the price didn’t go down with the size of the bulbs, but hey ho.
When you first turn the 100w bulb on, you will be surprised at how quickly it illuminates. Instantly in fact, unlike the modern “low energy” variants. As well as coming on immediately, you can also use the 100w bulb on a dimmer. Again unlike a low energy version.
There are downsides to the 100w lamp. Firstly, it gets very warm, so you have to make sure your fitting is designed for use with it. And, shockingly, it uses 100w of energy. That’s almost 4 times as much as a low energy equivalent.
On the plus side though, it is made in Europe, isn’t full of plastic, lead, mercury and other chemicals, or made in a smoke belching plant in China.
At least THIS one was made in Europe. The production of these lamps is now banned, so stocks are diminishing, and wholesalers are taking advantage by raising prices on an almost daily basis.
Low energy lamps have their place, but you can’t beat the humble 100w bulb for doing the job of lighting a room as intended.
When the new generation of LED low energy lamps come along, the 100w bulb will become redundent, but until then, it has its place in the home… and Britains hearts.

Great to see that a small retailer like yourself has a useful website. I already know that you’re helpful but this is “long distance” help.
