New year, same old story

So, it’s Nearly Febuary and the newspapers and TV news are telling us that the economy is shrinking and that we are heading towards double dip recession. Which, by its very nature, is caused by a lack of consumer confidence. Low consumer confidence is derived from the consumers fears and concerns about the state of the economy, and they rely on the media to give them this information.
It’s a viscious circle, and one we need to get out of FAST. The market at the moment is driven by price, and price alone, and a lot of the biggest non-electrical retailers have entered the market with the intention of breaking it. Sainsbury for example, are using Electricals as a way of increasing basket values, without actually increasing profits. To make millions of pounds a year profit, you can afford to sell additional lines at cost and start to steal market share.
Looking for a camera price the other day, I got results from Tesco, Sainsbury, Asda, Debenhams, New Look and about 5 other “non-electrical” stores. All of these companies succesful in thier own fields, looking to break into a market that, to be honest, is struggling.
The scary thing is, if they win the war, you the consumer will suffer. Customer service, expertise and advice will be sacrificed, and once market share is obtained, these stores will control the pricing, and scarily, the quality of what is available on the market.
I know times are tough, but don’t be tempted to buy cheap, non-brand items, or big value items from non-specialist retailers. If the price is lower its NOT becasue the small shops are making more money, it’s because the big companies are selling for next to nothing.
