Dyson and his meddling ways
Tuesday, 18 Aug 2009 ~ Posted by Mook
Why doesn’t James Dyson put his mind towards something else?
His range of vacuum cleaners, quite rightly, have become the best selling in the UK. From the very first DC-01 onwards, he took everything wrong with vacuum cleaners and made it better. He took on established, lazy names who dominated the market, and beat them at their own game.
His products evolved, and in my opinion, reached their peak with the Dc-07. It was a machine that was easy to use, easy to empty, had washable filters and was easy to clear should it get blocked.
The DC-07, in my opinion, was perfect.
Then he started “fiddling”. Fussing about the design. Putting telescopic wands on uprights, adding complicated terminology, having more than one model in each catagory and generally not concentrating on what the market wanted. Not only had he over complicated the machines, but he’d confused the public too.
Then he brought out the “Ball” apparently the best thing since sliced bread, and making all “wheeled” vacuums redundant. Didn’t help that he was still selling “wheeled” vacuums and again added to the confusion.
Then, his masterstroke. The DC-24. The biggest problem with Dyson uprights has always been thier weight, near 9kg! Finally, with the DC-24, he’s created a lightweight machine, coming in under 5.5kg. Ideal for the elderly market, or those who have trouble lifting or moving.
The price of this machine aimed at the elderly? Nearly £250.
TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY QUID! For a vacuum cleaner?!?!? Is he insane?
First alienate a huge portion of the market by ditching British manufacture, then insult them by making a machine they can use, then charging the earth for it.
Totally crazy.
Dyson should stop making vacuums and enter a new market. Seek out another flawed market and transform it. I dunno, a steam iron that doesn’t scale up, or maybe a kettle that lasts more than 5 minutes. Or a toasted than totasts evenly on both sides.
Instead it seems like he’s flogging his one good idea for every penny its worth, and has lost the “British success” tag that people used to love him for.
All imho of course
