Blind belief in big stores.

Tuesday, 24 May 2011 ~ Posted by Mook

It frustrates me you know. People have lost sight of what they should expect from a retailer. People are so used to filing procession-like into enormous out of town stores, being served by inexperienced temporary staff, paying for delivery, paying for installation, paying for disposal of their old equipment, paying through the nose for accessories and warranty plans they don’t need. It doesn’t have to be this way. It shouldn’t be this way. People have forgotten about their local stores. The one to one service they offer, trained and knowledgeable staff, free services like delivery and installation, and above all else, competitive pricing.

Honestly, why would you want to pay the same in a big store as you would in a small local shop? The beauty of a small local store is the staff are usually the owners of the business, or their family. They do the job because they have a passion for the products and are more interested in selling you what you NEED rather than what offers the greatest commission or a pat on the back from the manager. After all, they want you to come back again and only good pricing and service will make you do this.

Take a TV for example. Many a grandson will tell their Nan they need Full HD, when the truth is full HD is irrelevant when it comes to watching BBC2 on a Sunday evening.

Many a son or daughter will buy their parents a non-brand Chinese TV from a supermarket. Something like TEKNIKAL or the like. Never mind that it is a poor-quality set with a washed-out picture and tinny sound, sometimes it’s almost impossible to get them working at all. In frustration, they call upon a specialist like us to get them out of trouble. We can, but the result is they’ve paid more money than they should for a set which will disappoint them.

My point is, buy a TV from a local shop. Check prices elsewhere, the competition, Currys, Comet, John Lewis etc and then pop into your local store and speak to them. You MAY pay a little bit more, but more often than not you won’t – and the service you receive could be worth hundreds of pounds in the long run.

And it’s not just complicated electronics either. We know of several instances where a big store has simply left a customer’s new washing machine in their front garden and left it to them to drag it into the house and plumb it in. Buy a washing machine from a local store and the chances are they will deliver it, install it and dispose of your old one, at the sort of price the big stores want for delivery only.

I know I would.

And I know we do.
