Over recent years, “Electrical shops” (I use the term in the loosest sense) have been popping up all over the place. The way to spot the stores, is the collection of unwrapped, slightly dishevelled appliances on the pavement outside.
I feel the need to clarify that these are NOT new appliances. It should be obvious as they sit in the street covered in clingfilm in all weathers, and in many cases are machines that went out of production some years ago (brown and beige washing machine anyone?). If so, that’s fine…if it gets people out of trouble for a few months, no problem. What concerns me is that many of them are both ambitiously priced and quite clearly past their prime. I recently saw a Hotpoint machine for sale which we were selling new about seven years ago, priced up for £185. Leaving aside the fact that such a machine is already at the end of its’ life in my experience, it seems an astonishing waste of money when a brand new one could be available for around £250, with all the extra features and lower running costs we take for granted now.
If you are fully aware of what you’re buying and have realistic expectations of it, that’s entirely your decision to make. But I do wonder how many of the more vulnerable of us – the older generation, people in urgent need and so on – get talked into paying top dollar for a machine as old and in little better condition than the one they’re getting rid of.
If you are a landlord, and are looking for Low cost appliances, we have a great selection of machines available at good prices WITH Warranties and free delivery.
