What will be replacing normal lightbulbs?

Hi,

Quite a busy month coming up as the production of pearlescent lamps is ceased.  Basically,  the acid used to etch the glass has been outlawed,  so the lamps can no longer be produced.  However stock are expected to last some time yet.

Clear lamps will be available well into next year and beyond as they are replaced by lower energy,  halogen alternatives.  these will be the closest thing to a normal lightbulb around.

In the meantime,  the range of Compact Flourescent lamps is growing smaller and more diverse by the day.  People still don’t like the colour temperature,  the warm up time or the “flicker”  they generate,  and some people are concerned about the mercury they contain.

The answer to this is LED.  Apparently LED lamps that give a similar light to old fashioned bulds have been developed.  When they come to market you’ll be able to buy a lamp which will last for years and years, Contain no mercury and come on instantly whilst costing virtually nothing to run.

There’s no doubt the replacement for an old fashioned buld hasn’t arrived yet,  but maybe this change will force progress towards the next generation of technology.

So,  if you use clear bulbs.  Don’t panic.  If you use pearl bulbs,  either stock up or seek a low energy alternative,  but please be sensible.  The panic buying this week has caused wholesale prices to increase nearly 50%!!!
