I need a new fridge freezer and I hate defrosting, so was thinking of going for a ‘frost free’ model. Do they work? Are they expensive to run?

Frost free fridge freezers are very hit and miss. Firstly, they do make life slightly easier by making defrosting less frequent, but in our experience, they do still freeze up.
A frost free fridge freezer uses the cool air from the freezer, to cool the fridge. It does this by drawing the air through a channel between the two areas, using a fan. This fan, some people complain, can be noisy.
This channel is also prone to freezing up, meaning that the airflow becomes restricted and eventully the fridge runs warm.
All of this is slightly irrelevant from some manufacturers such as siemens or Bosch, who’s mainly make frost free units, but on cheaper appliances it’s worth looking at manual defrost as they tend to freeze up that much quicker.
As far as running costs, Frost free itself makes no real impact on the cost to run, and most modern A rated appliances will be a lot more efficient than your old unit.
