G’day Mook, I have a Smeg oven extractor unit but it never seems up to the job of removing the smoke and steam from my kitchen cooking duties. I make the best steak in the world, but when I’m finished the kitchen looks like a warzone! Do I have to upgrade my motor for a more powerful one? It’s noisy enough as it is. All my piping is correct and the outlet appears to work as the flaps go out when the extractor unit is switched on. Help me Obi Mook, you’re my only hope!

Well, the first thing I’d suggest would be to have a quick look at the filter in your existing extractor (hood). If it hasn’t been cleaned or changed for a while it could be causing the problem. Many Smeg hoods have a metal mesh-look filter which can usually be cleaned simply by putting it in the dishwasher, otherwise it will have a paper filter which should be replaced and cost under a fiver.
If your filters are clean, it could simply be that the hood isn’t powerful enough. You’re off to a good start by venting it outside, as this is far more efficient than recirculating the air back into the kitchen. If you’re looking to replace your current hood, look carefully at the specification of the ones you’re considering and check the airflow rate. This is generally rated in cubic metres of air extracted every hour, and of course a higher number is better. The extraction rate can vary wildly and is just as important when choosing a hood as the design of it. If, like Jeremy Clarkson you crave absolute POWER!!!, there are a number of twin-motor hoods on the market and good ones can move huge volumes of air without being much noisier than a basic single-motor one. One of these should certainly clear the air!

Of course
Although we probably wouldn’t sell you another Smeg. Lots of options on cooker hoods, from know brands such as Bosch etc to lesser know firms like Luxair or Elica. Take a look at elica.co.uk, luxairhoods.co.uk or click some of the links at the bottom of this page. Any questions, just ask!
